Thank you. A soft gold ball size mass on a leg may be a fatty tumor or lipoma. Unfortunately that is not the only thing it could be. A lymph node is also on the back of the leg near the knee and if it is swollen that could be serious. The general rule of thumb with lumps and bumps is to have your veterinarian check it soon after you discover it.

The good news is, cancer does not pop up to golf ball size in a day so I would not worry about that. If it is NOT hot, red, or painful then it does not sound like an infection or an abscess. It could be a cyst which is a fluid fill sack in the middle layers of the skin. It is usually caused by some kind of trauma to that area.

How big is the lump on my Greyhound’s side?
My 9 year old greyhound has a golf-ball sized lump on his left side towards the bottom of his rib cage. It seems to be fluid in that it is very soft and can be pressed all the way down.
