Can you use sick time to care for a dog?
Recently my dog had major surgery, which is going to require extra care at home. One of my coworkers who has dogs and has worked for our company for over 30 years told me to use sick time if I needed to take time off to care for my dog, because that’s what she usually does.
Why are older dogs more likely to get sick?
In trying to decide what to do, one of the major considerations is age. Can a family member have their pet put down?
The animal is likely to suffer, the family is likely to suffer emotionally seeing their pet in distress and pain and it is very likely that the pet will die horribly at home. In these cases, it is kinder to say your goodbyes and spend time with your pet in the vet clinic before having the pet put down.

When is it time to put your dog down?
In otherwise healthy dogs, this is not necessarily a reason to put your dog down. However, if this lack of control is in combination with other symptoms of declining health, then choosing euthanasia may be your best choice. An accident in the house once in awhile is not the issue.
When to know when it’s time to let your pet go?
Waiting until the suffering is nearly constant would make the decision to euthanize “easier,” but this is certainly not best for the animal in question. All we can do is monitor quality of life, and when we see signs of significant decline with no reasonable expectation for meaningful improvement, euthanasia is warranted from that point on.
