He/she may take a aspirate of the mass and have it evaluated by a pathologist. This is a good noninvasive way to determine what type of mass you are dealing with. In the meantime, I would cold pack the mass to reduce blood flow. If this is a hematoma, it will slow the rate in which it fills.

Why is my lab dog’s leg giving way?
She has hip dysplasia and her front leg has arthritis but the last few days she has really gone downhill and is struggling to walk and cant get up the steps to the house. She sometimes goes sideways and nearly falls but an hour ago she collapsed. We were prepared for the worst but now she has walked onto the terrace and is barking at the cats.
